This is one situation where simply reading a spec sheet will not tell you how the actual GPU performs in games. Many people look at the specifications alone and make a pre-conceived notion about performance before even reading what the gameplay experience actually is. We have it in our heads that a 128-bit memory bus is slow and 32 streaming processors doesn’t sound like a lot when we are used to seeing 96 mentioned for the 8800 GTS and 128 for the 8800 GTX.
Well, our gameplay evaluation has proved that the architecture of the GeForce 8 series is much different, and better, compared to the previous pipelined architecture in GPUs. This goes to show that you cannot use conventional thinking anymore. It has been more than a year now that we have been telling you to erase the word “pipeline” from your vocabulary. The definitions and thought patterns we had that were true with GPUs a year or more ago are simply not true now. We must use new terminology with new definitions to explain hardware and we must not think in old terms.
Yes, the GeForce 8600 GTS has a 128-bit memory bus. But you know what? It did not hamper performance; in fact, our gameplay was faster than the 256-bit memory ATI Radeon X1950 Pro. The X1950 Pro’s memory runs at 1.38 GHz giving us 44 GB/sec of memory bandwidth. The GeForce 8600 GTS runs at 2 GHz giving us 32 GB/sec. That is 10 GB/sec less of memory bandwidth, yet, we have higher gaming performance! It is all in the architecture and the memory controller. We were able to run Flight Sim X at 4X AA and 16X AA at 1600x1200 which is very memory intensive, the GeForce 8600 GTS could do it with 10 GB/sec less of memory bandwidth available.
Yes, there are only 32 streaming processors. But you know what? It did not hamper performance; in fact, our gameplay was faster than the 36 pixel shader processor, 8 vertex shader ATI Radeon X1950 Pro. Is there an echo in here? With the traditional pipeline architecture of the ATI Radeon X1950 Pro we have 36 pixel shader processors which all they can do is pixel shader operations. We have 8 vertex shader units that all they can do are vertex shader operations. But what if a game is heavily vertex bound? The GPU would be sitting there with a lot of pixel shader processors doing absolutely nothing.
This is the beauty of the unified architecture in the GeForce 8600 GTS. With 32 scalar streamlining processors the GPU can balance the load of pixel and vertex data so that nothing is idle. We get much better efficiency out of this system. The streaming processors themselves are also clocked at incredible speeds, 1.566 GHz for example on the XFX GeForce 8600 GTS XXX Edition. In Oblivion and S.T.A.L.K.E.R., two very shader intensive games, the GeForce 8600 GTS was much faster. We were able to go up a resolution, enable shadows, and enable grass in Oblivion versus the Radeon X1950 Pro. In S.T.A.L.K.E.R. we had the option to use Object Dynamic Lighting at 1024x768 with full lighting and shadows.
Simply put we are playing at the highest settings we have ever played at with a $200 video card. The 8600 GTS runs circles around the Radeon X1950 Pro.

Það sem er að fara mest í fólk er að 8600 GTS er 256 MB 128 Bit meðan 8800 GTS yfirklukka er 320 MB með 320 Bit minnisbandvídd fyrir 5000 kr meira.
=
300% fleiri steam processors
25% meira minni
